The Childish Mind is Contagious

March 18, 2005

I’ve been working at my new place of employment for three weeks now. I still don’t hate it, and I think this is the first time since I worked at the animal shelter that I didn’t hate my job after only a few days. I still loathe my pay rate, but I’m trying to get past it.

It’s been a long time since I’ve been around large groups of women. The room I work in holds as many people that worked in my last job total. (Did that make sense? I writing through a very bad headache.)

Anyway, I had forgotten how utterly stupid women can get when a child, or even a picture of a child, is suddenly present.

One of my co-worker’s phones was on the fritz. One of the tech people, a woman, came in to check it out. During this whole thing, she’s very professional, testing, fixing, etc. etc., getting the job done. But then — *gasp!* — she sees it — a picture of a child.

And her brain takes a flying leap. She rushes over to the desk and asks the woman sitting there about the picture. It’s her daughter. And the tech starts making actual baby talk at the freakin’ picture. ‘You’re so cuuuuuute!”

Made me want to gag.

I know I’m very much in the minority because I’m female and have no interest in children. It’s not that I just don’t want any, I really don’t have any interest in them unless they’re in my family. A few days ago, another co-worker (the same one with the broken phone, in fact) brought her sister who hauled her three year old and 2 month old along with her. All production stopped as the women in the office just had to go see them and gawk at them, like they were some sort of oddity.

Jesus, people, kids are everywhere. Get over it.

This fascination seems to stop once kids start thinking for themselves. I guess the majority of women only find mindless, character-less human beings interesting. Makes you wonder.
